Untitled California

Still Born 5 (detail). Color and black & white lithographs on Japanese tissue paper, wax, thread. 2001-2005 - Karen Gallagher Iverson

Colored pastel on wax. 20014-2017

Mists of flourished line patterns, and rows of detailed pochoir printed dots - forming photographic imagery - are laid in colored pastel over the surface of wax to build up California landscapes. Drawn fog and storms gently unsettle the open photographic vista, as the earthly counterpart would do in nature, showing beauty in what is obscured and disturbed. In turn, the linear presence of the halftone image base disrupts the undulating cascade of marks, emulating the static hum where these two elements - earth and air- meet.
